Sounds very suspicious to me, too.If this is an area of missions interest for you, you could ask for a reference to the Church of God pastor and verify his credentials -- however, unfortunately, if he holds valid credentials that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a scam. You could also ask for information about the organization that handles the money and verify their 501(c)3 status and look them up on the charity watch websites.

The United Congregational Holiness Church is a valid, yet small offshoot of the Congregational Holiness Church, headquartered in Griffin, GA.The Sister who called is a member of a UCHC Church.Her main concern was paying ransom, which is also my concern Charles A. It’s almost certainly a scam. If there’s not a credible 501(c)3 involved that can be researched and validated, it should be a burning bright red flag.
