| The claim is that Paul took control of the teaching of the early church with a different focus than the one Jesus had. It's an effort to delegitimize Christianity, since modern-day Christianity is derived from Paul (who derived his teaching from Christ, of course). Basically, modern Christianity reflects Paul's teachings and not Jesus' and so we need to throw it all out. Thomas Jefferson called Paul the first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus. |

Thomas Jefferson called Paul the first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus. It seems to center around justification by faith (at least so far as I've seen, which is not much), so it's really just more of the same works vs. faith nonsense. I think there is SOME legitimacy to the claim that Paul took Christianity to the next stop on the route, so to speak. That is, Jesus laid the groundwork, then the apostles spread the word and elaborated on the doctrine, etc.The key thing I have heard was that Jesus preached the gospel...while Paul (and the others) made the gospel about Jesus' coming, death, and resurrection. That is, there are those that like to claim that Jesus' statements (probably as mainly exhibited in the Sermon on the Mount) IS the gospel...but that Paul and others made it about Jesus instead of the things Jesus taught. |

| The claim by the Jesus vs. Paul folks is that Paul took it in a direction Jesus did not intend and never would have wanted. |
