In Biblical times? In the 1800s? What do you think

Very good question, it is hard for one who was never in a position to even care for an extra human being other than family, to know the feeling of 'owning' someone.Evidently it was not considered so in Biblical times, the scripture does not 'condone' it in my mind, but does 'order' kindness of master and slave methinks. But I am not a scholar. So all I can say about the 1800s is once it was against the law, then yes I think it could be a sin, that would be breaking the law and we are encouraged to follow those methinks again. But all that is just off the top of my head, but it is still a good question. Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

Perhaps American Slavery started as indentured servitude. For passage to America, folks agreed to work for a master for 4-7 years, much as Jacob did for Leah, etc...Whites and blacks signed up. After a while, some joker's decided, why let them go after 7 years...in fact, why make them sign a contract...most of them are unlearned savages, why not just take them from their home. From Virginia State website:

Only whites owning blacks is evil. The rest is ok, apparently

I think Lincoln said it very well (I admit I have very mixed feelings on Lincoln, but this is one speech that I do admire)

This statement is absolutely gross. In my opinion, it represents rank racism and is incompatible with any claim to the name of Christ. I think your statement represents ranks ignorance, my brother. The race of those who are descendants of slaves is irrelevant. Their actions and collective attitudes are indeed relevant and are a matter of public record. Your knee-jerk jump at the race card is quite troubling. As for those who think our Civil War was God's way of punishing slavery, I must ask them, why would God punish the USA who had one of the most benevolent slave systems ever known to man, and in particular among western hemisphere nations who participated in the African slave trade? Why was Brazil spared his holy wrath and indignation? After all, 48% of all slaves imported to the Americas from Africa went to Brazil, a nation that liteally worked them to death, and bought more as they were needed to replace those who had died. The USA imported just 6% of all African slaves sent to the Americas and set up a family-oriented system. Were some American slaves treated poorly? Yes. Is slavery an unnatural state, even if it designed to be benevolent? Yes. But if God is going to punish nations who partook in it, he sure picked the wrong one to kill 600,000 of its young men
