What's a way you read your Bible devotionally, other than a set number of chapters per day?

A friend recently shared two ideas with me that I am eager to try.1) Read through Matthew, and every the text references a verse in the OT, go back to the OT and read the whole chapter.2) Read through Acts, and each time Paul stops somewhere where an epistle was later written, stop and read that epistle.

Since about 10th grade, I've tried to read at least one chapter a day. But often I get caught up in the story or theme and continue on and on.And sometimes, rather than read more than one chapter, my reading devolves into a Bible search for this verse or that verse that are in support of something I read originally. I have little notes written in the margins, etc., to remind me of some thought I had, or to link to some other verse that is attached in some way.
